Joshua Gordon is an Irish artist who works across collage, film, photography, and sound. His practice weaves a roving ethnography wherein Gordon is drawn to often alienated global subcultures; young bikers in Bangkok; the trans community in Old Havana; Juggalos and edgelords in the American Midwest. It’s at these fringes that Gordon conjures sensitive portraits of contemporary culture in all its glistening, corrupted/corruptible, metatwinkling, unsteady, chaotic state/s.

In Transformation, he looks inward and charts a paranoic descent into an abased identity crisis. Reeling from the end of a romantic relationship, he finds himself in Mexico, alone on a beach, deep into a psychedelic realignment, using his iPhone to peer back at himself in the midst of a great personal unraveling. The images are unhinged - spiked with a nervous friction that is reminiscent of Hannah Hoch or Ray Johnson, two other irreverent yet brooding artists making introspective work in their own eras of personal and social/cultural reckoning.

The nine works on display in this exhibition are in dialogue with the new book, also titled Transformation. In both, Gordon works, then reworks, then fractures and refracts his image into an oblivion, a dark night of the soul that speaks to this chronically chopped age that we are all enduring, alone.
